QR C ODES "The key to making QR code marketing successful is to be precise and interactive with customers. They don't react well when they take a picture of the code and it takes them to a static homepage. Make sure your codes link to something you're going to update," says Meagan Knoll. with customers. They don't react well when they take a picture of the code and it takes them to a static homepage. Make sure your codes link to something you're going to update." Tell Them More QR codes can also help you make a sale by educating the customer. Using them to start a conversation about products and new additions to the salon can be a creative way to increase the amount of time you get to influence your visitors. It can also increase the presence of a small staff. "I was putting a new floor in my bathroom, which I knew nothing about," says Kizer and Bender retail consultant Richard Kizer. "So I walked into an independent flooring store where no one was imme- diately available to help me. I noticed the QR code on the material I wanted: It sent me to a video of a professional salesperson talking about the product and what I could do with it. I heard someone walk up behind me, and when I turned around, my jaw hit the floor. It was the man from the video! He serviced a customer even when he was busy with another customer." Kizer's experience is a great example of how QR codes can provide unexpected outlets for customer service. Linking to a video featuring your employee is just the personal touch that will impress cli- ents while establishing that your salon is staffed with experts. This is also a great tool for providing instructions on take-home products. Placing a QR code on your tan extend- ers or sunless products can take the guesswork out of maintaining a great tan, and the arm of your customer ser- vice can extend all the way into your client's home. "I was buying plants at Home Depot, and I never remember how to plant them. But there was a QR code on the package, so I scanned it when I got home and received instructions," says Georganne Bender, retail consultant for Kizer and Bender. Because she knew she had good instructions, Bender could try something outside of her comfort zone. Imagine how that could apply to your clients who just need a little extra help trying sunless, body wraps or red light therapy for the first time. A well-placed QR code can give them information that sets proper expectations and makes them comfort- able with something new. Sharing knowledge through QR codes can be extremely profitable for salons. When you take these chances seriously "I was buying plants at Home Depot, and I never remember how to plant them. But there was a QR code on the package, so I scanned it when I got home and received instructions," says Georganne Bender. 85 SMART TAN MAGAZINE [ SmartTan.com
