BCNPF "Our livelihood as a business is depen- dent upon the public education of vitamin D. If we let the dermatologists continue their smash campaign unopposed, we lose," Cunningham says. "And, obvi- ously, the more people learn about the mechanisms that cause cancer, the more likely they are to try and avoid it, saving lives." "We were motivated by this campaign because it allowed us to do something for a good cause and portray a positive relationship with UV light," Howell says. "Because it all tied together, our clients were very generous. The more money we can raise for research and getting positive information in the hands of the public, the better!" While many businesses do not have the size or reach of chains like Ashley Lynn's, Celsius or Midnite, Howell and Cunningham believe most of the same fundraising principles can still be applied in a smaller setting. "The promotions work regardless of the size of the salon," Howell says. "Every contribution helps so the more that par- ticipate the better." "Discounting tanning packages doesn't cost that much compared to product discounts," adds Cunningham. "[Smaller salons] could do a 'buy this package and receive another one free with a five dollar donation to the Breast Cancer Prevention campaign.'" magazine, online and at Smart Tan Downtown in Nashville Oct. 19-21. More information on incentives will be available soon at www.vitamindfounda- tion.org. The Vitamin D Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives by offering support to groups and individuals who recognize the criticality of vitamin D deficiency, acknowledge sun exposure as the body's most efficient and natural method of vitamin D production, and are commit- ted to taking action. The Breast Cancer Natural Prevention Foundation is an action organization dedicated to saving lives by promoting natural lifestyle choices proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer, most notably by correcting epidemic vitamin D deficiency. The primary objective of the BCNPF is to educate health care providers, the scientific community, the media and con- sumers about the science that supports the preventative effects of diet, exercise and natural vitamin D levels. Research has established that maintain- ing natural vitamin D blood levels cuts breast cancer risk in half. Because vita- min D is made naturally and abundantly when skin is exposed to sunlight – and because people spend less time in the sun than at any point in history – vitamin D levels are declining. More than two out of three North American women are vitamin D deficient, unnecessarily putting millions of women at an elevated risk for breast cancer. The Vitamin D Foundation will also pro- vide incentives for businesses that go above and beyond expectations. The VDF will offer prizes for businesses that raise the most money for the Natural Breast Cancer Prevention Campaign. Winners will be determined on a per- location basis so larger chains have no advantage over individual operations. Businesses that reach the benchmarks set by the VDF will also be recognized for their efforts by Smart Tan in the 97 SMART TAN MAGAZINE [ SmartTan.com To order fundraising kits, call 866-650- 6463.
