STATE LEGISLATIVE ISSUES Battles at the state level continue to take up a disproportionate amount of the ITA's time and resources. We are now up to 50 bills in 28 states. Clearly, our opponents see an opportunity to hurt us this year and they are throwing significant time, energy and money into the push for age restrictions. The other side is aggressively working the media. For each leg- islative hearing, they bring in numbers of melanoma survivors who blame their misfortune on sun tanning indoors. In some cases, they blame indoor tanning even when they never actually tanned indoors! Melanoma is a terrible disease and it is shame- less the way these victims are exploited for political gain. Our discussions often focus on the legislation dealing with age restriction, but we also pay close attention to other important issues affecting your businesses. For example, the District of Columbia recently proposed 74 pages of some of the most ridic- ulous and burdensome regulations you can imagine. The regulations appear to have been cut and pasted from the restaurant industry because there is a reoccurring focus on sani- tation and health of the employees. The proposed regulations would also require three trained employees to be present during all hours of operation, and for no apparent reason. We will do our best to get these regulations reversed but, just like in the states, we have to hire local experts. It is an expensive and time- consuming process. However, it is important. Regulations are often copied, so we have to deal with the problems immediately or risk seeing them pop up in other states. In spite of the challenges and the campaigns of misinformation being waged against us, we continue to have success. As of March 5, the bills in Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Washington State and West Virginia are dead and a number of other bills are firmly under control. However, we still have some major hurdles to clear before this election year winds down and we need the help of businesses nationwide to win these fights. Please get involved!
