pub note Keeping a Sunny Disposition As active members of the indoor tanning industry, we're often prone to dwelling on the bad news that surrounds our industry. I for one am inundated daily with teen tan ban regulatory reports, anti-tanning articles, and other gloomy news. My job (and yours) can become very depressing if it weren't for, as Paul Harvey would say, "The rest of the story." Headlines such as "Sun Exposure: Vitamin D And Other Health Benefts Of Sunlight" are popping up daily. This same article stated, "600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancer could be prevented each year with suffcient exposure to sunlight." "Blocking the sun's rays from reaching our skin dramatically infuences our optimal vitamin D levels, leading to higher mortality, critical illness and mental health disorders." This news came from a health care reporter criticizing Sun Scare zealots and sunscreen manufacturers. A Swedish study of 40,000 women resulted in the lead researcher stating, "Our studies show that women with active sunbathing habits live longer," going as far as endorsing indoor tanning. Matt Russell, CEO, Smart Tan And, as most of us know, the benefts of sunlight go farther than just vitamin D. Dermatologists at the University of Edinburgh released a study suggesting that sunlight, through the production of nitric oxide from UVA exposure, lowers your blood pressure, reducing your risk of heart disease. Researchers claim this fnding could possibly prevent 80 times more deaths than skin cancer. Now I'm not suggesting that we advertise these claims in our communities. We all know better than that. It's just wonderful to see the good news about UV light coming from so many sources. Keep smiling; the sun is shining.
