member of the month so did their interest in trying again. One year ago, Peter and Rachel decided to get back into the sunless game. They purchased a mobile handheld unit so they could test it at each location during the initial stages. But they quickly found that they had a great thing going and decided to buy units for each of the salons. Now the salon nds success by incorporating airbrush tanning into EFT packages. Level 1 members get one free spray per month, Level 2 members get two sprays per month, and so on. After only one year back in sunless, they are already considering the possibility of adding an automated booth to their services. Its nice to be able to offer the client choices the option to decide if they want custom color or a convenient machine to spray them. We expect to spray a lot more clients with the booth, says Rachel. Up to the Challenge Sun Factorys biggest challenge has been the economy. Although they havent lost a lot of clients, the couple sees fewer purchases from the clients they do have. The way clients spend money is a big challenge. They are spending their money a lot smarter, says Rachel. But the salon has gotten smarter as a result. According to Rachel, the salon is built on the principals of genuineness and cleanliness, which she feels stand up against any test. With the motto Friendliness + Cleanliness + Sales = Success, the whole staff maintains a positive and focused outlook. By presenting value through facilities, service and EFTs, the salon continues to thrive in a difcult environment. The locations of the salons have also proven helpful. By being located near key destinations such as grocery stores and major roads, they secure visibility and convenience for most locals. Rachel has also said it can be tricky to keep up with health inspection regulations as they continue to change. While its just something that comes with being in business, staying up to date isnt something that Rachel takes lightly. Something as small as a cot can keep you out of business for a few days, says Rachel. Big Plans Despite these challenges, Sun Factory continues to grow just like the relationship between Peter and Rachel. Before the economy became an issue, the pair began looking at two more locations for Sun Factory. The timing wasnt right, but with that on the back burner and a growing demand for sunless on the docket, they have plenty on their plate. We are looking to build-out two corporate salons and convert one or two existing salons into Sun Factory franchises. We currently have two lease negotiations underway, and will hopefully be starting the rst build-out by spring! For more information about Sun Factory Tanning Studios, visit www.sunfactoryusa.com. 55 SMART TAN MAGAZINE SmartTan.com
