member of the month Ashley lAAbs Editor, Smart tan magazinE In the early 2000s, the print industry was changing: Internet-based printing companies were becoming more popular and home printing technology became simultaneously more advanced and affordable. After 17 years working for a printing company, Peter Cappadona started to see the ramications in his own workplace. As the layoffs began, Peter decided to begin calculating his next steps. His rst thought was to open a gym, but the overhead was daunting. It was then that he began to explore indoor tanning a business that relied on a similar EFT-driven structure. One decade ago, Peter opened the rst location of Sun Factory Tanning Studios in Quincy, Mass. What Peter didnt know then was that there was a missing component. Two years and a second location later, his vivacious girlfriend Rachel Losordo joined Sun Factory as a partner one who would help Peter grow his business and later become his ance. Rachel was in retail sales while going to school for criminal justice and interning at the Quincy district courthouse. When she began working with her then boyfriend at the salon, tanning quickly became more than a beautication routine. Together, they opened a third location. I always liked the management aspect of retail, and sales always felt comfortable, says Rachel. And once I got into the business, it just felt right being a woman who was into looking good and feeling good. It was something I wanted to run with everyone wants to do what they love, and now I do. 49 SMART TAN MAGAZINE SmartTan.com An Energetic Getaway Although the three Sun Factory locations are not exact replicas, Rachel and Peter have put a lot of effort into creating a contemporary, high-end, upbeat atmosphere that resounds through each store. The seating area in the lobby is equipped with comfortable leather chairs and warm lighting xtures. The painted beams and pipes in the ceiling open up the space while creating an industrial vibe. Vibrant oranges and mossy greens give the store some contrasting earthy qualities, accented by tile and hardwood oors. Finally, some funky electronic music keeps the energy high. Its an escape, but its also an upbeat place, says Rachel. But there is more to Sun Factory than dcor. To Rachel, the most important part of a clients visit is using the opportunity to give them the hotel experience. That means providing a clean, crisp environment where service is key. Each service room has the same ottoman, two towels and sanitizing spray for their guests to use. Before they enter, employees always offer visitors an extra towel or water
