inspired ideas skincare solutions, llc Laurie Retzlaff, Trainer With 13 years in the tanning industry and 10 as a Norvell Sunless trainer, Laurie Retzlaff is something of a smarty-pants when it comes to sunless. As a sales manager for Stay Tan North, her passion is helping people start and grow their sunless business she even spent a few years building her own on the side. She gives us a glimpse into what Norvell training has to offer, and provides some popular tips for giving great tans. Q: What do you cover in a typical training? A: Often, we start with a basic review of how spray tanning got started and has advanced over the last 10 years. Its bigger than what people thought it was going to be. We discuss what DHA is, how it works and what you need to do to prepare. People will learn how to teach their clients about before and after care. Theres some discussion of Norvell products, what they do, selling points, retail pricing and usage. Lastly, we work hands-on to train attendees on technique. Q: What challenges do technicians face when learning to spray? A: Their biggest fear is turning someone orange. In the 90s, all the big cosmetic companies had their own home applications, but DHA wasnt perfected at the time, and people got bad color as a result. Now, we have gone through the trial and error. We know to exfoliate the skin and prepare it with pH balancing spray to make it a better tan. A lot of people dont understand that its going to be a teaching process. There is education behind giving a good spray tan and earning repeat customers who understand the purpose of these products. You are color-treating skin just like many of your clients color-treat their hair: I know I have been told what products I should be using to make sure my color stays longer. This is the same thing. Q: What are some signs someone isnt comfortable spraying yet? A: People want to go really fast because they are worried about the solution running, but once they get comfortable with the gun in their hand, they get over that hump and want to master the technique. Seasoned technicians have gone through 105 SMART TAN MAGAZINE SmartTan.com some trial and error. It comes down to knowing how certain body parts respond and knowing when to take your time. It doesnt take a long time to become comfortable, but until you experience it, you just dont get it. Q: What are some of the difcult spots of the body to spray? A: Hands and feet are the most common areas that a new person will mess up. You shouldnt spray these areas directly a natural tan fades down from shoulder. The hands tend to look a little lighter; you just have to assure clients that over time the color will develop. You also dont want to oversaturate facial skin because it will fade faster. Elbows and knees can be a problem, especially if the client is older. Make sure they bend knees and elbows, and spray under the armpits. Dry it before you put the arm down. After a few attempts, people develop their own routine. Q: What retail products are you passionate about? A: I tell my customers to get into a habit of using a pH-balancing lotion. You should include it in the pricing for a spray tan you dont know a persons chemical makeup just by looking at them. Not applying it can affect the outcome of the tan. I also think the shower gel is really smart. It has a built in pH balancer in it, and nothing in that product that will take away the color of the tan. Let your clients know that if they are going to spend money on their sunless color, they should have the products that prolong it.
