canadian update Canada's busy season has been full of bustle and proft, but some areas are still struggling with negative media and the legislative process. SEE PAGE 21 Spray tanning numbers were up in all areas, especially where under-18 restrictions are in place. Salons were busy at all hours in the days prior to prom night and graduation day. Most salons couldn't keep up; some even wished they had a second or third sunless machine. It was great to hear salons reporting that sunless sales brought their revenue up compared to last year. It didn't seem to matter whether they had a booth, hand-held airbrushing or even just self-applied bronzers. Optimism in Busy Season The sales are in line with a recent Ipsos Reid consumer survey commissioned by a chemical sunscreen manufacturer. The survey showed that 61 percent of Canadians think they look healthier with a tan. Almost half of Canadians (48 percent) think it's important to get a base tan before a vacation in order to avoid sunburns, and over 54 percent of Canadians think that it is fne to tan as long as they do not burn. This is good news for the industry: People are still realizing the benefts of moderate sunbathing and how important a base tan is for protecting themselves from sunburning. In Ontario, the industry still awaits the provincial government to pass Bill 30, which calls for under-18 restrictions and warning signs. The bill has fnished its second reading and is awaiting a vote. Bill 30 would still need to go to committee hearing, have a third reading, and royal assent before it gets to the regulation phase. Bill 30 could be stopped in its tracks if the government is defeated on the budget bill that is being debated in the legislature. If the budget bill is voted down, there would be an election called and Bill 30 would be dropped and reintroduced after the election. The process would start all over and would mean another year of uncertainty and more media coverage of the industry in Ontario. The Joint Canadian Tanning Association completed its response to Health Canada's new proposed warning label for tanning equipment. The response included an updated version of the JCTA UV report. The main focus of the report was to ask Health Canada to not only update tanning equipment labels, but to include all UV emitting devices, creating one label for all equipment as they did in 1989. This would cover phototherapy equipment, which has not been updated since 1989 and could carry a higher risk according to the World Health Organization. This is especially important since you don't need a prescription to purchase an at-home UVA or UVB phototherapy unit in Canada and these units can be purchased online. At this time, the JCTA has not heard any response from the government. Steve Gilroy is vice president of Smart Tan Canada and publisher of Smart Tan Canada Magazine.
