NEW FACES WWW.SMARTTAN.COM MARCH 2015 ❘ SMART TAN MAGAZINE ❘ 66 SALON OWNER: JAIME KUCZEWSKI SALON NAME: BODY BRONZE TANNING BOUTIQUE LOCATION: BEDFORD, NH While working as a commercial real estate agent, Jaime Kuczewski came across a tanning salon for sale and couldn't wait to jump on the opportunity. Her passion for skin care and interest in a professional family business could finally be expressed at Body Bronze Tanning Boutique. After purchasing the salon in January, she wasted no time creating an inviting atmosphere and finding valuable resources. The high-end boutique is styled like a Hollywood home and equipped with refreshments to keep customers comfortable. Featured items like custom swimwear and quality skin care products complement their tanning products and services. The salon's goal is to be a place where customers feel comfortable taking their time and forming relationships with the staff. Jaime has three sons with whom she hopes to share her business. The oldest is headed off to college to study business management, but also works in the salon with the middle brother. For the proud mother, having a family business is a point of great joy, and she is excited to teach her sons the ins and outs of business from a firsthand perspective. But having a team of professionals and tanning experts is just as important to Jaime, who – in addition to selling commercial real estate – spent many years as an executive. She found out about Smart Tan when she was looking for industry tools to help Body Bronze succeed. "I wanted to reach out and learn the industry from the best people, and Smart Tan Magazine stood out as one of the publications that would further my business and help me learn everything I could to become an expert," says Jaime. In addition to studying the magazine, Jaime is completing her Ambassador Certification. Her sons are taking the UV Tanning Certification, while one of the experienced employees from the previous ownership is completing her Master's Certification. Jaime has already begun the process of updating the location's equipment: She most recently brought in two high-pressure sunbeds and is creating a VIP sunless room. She hopes to continue changing the equipment and is already considering the addition of red light therapy due to client requests. Her long-term goal is to track processes and procedures as the business develops, eventually creating a blueprint that the team could duplicate into multiple locations. With a firm understanding of her client base, overhead and products, she is determined to build a profitable indoor tanning business. The new business owner hopes her Smart Tan membership will help her along the way. "Smart Tan is going to help us become the go-to people who can listen and educate; the magazine will help us figure out where we need to be as we grow. We will have to change up our plan with time, and Smart Tan keeps us on the cutting edge," says Jaime. To Jaime, knowledge is confidence, and confidence is everything. Whether she is helping her customers feel and look their best, or providing education for her staff, she knows that confidence is the secret to making her dream business a reality. SALON OWNER: MONICA HOY SALON NAME: TAN CLUB LOCATION: JEFFERSON CITY, MO After working in the Missouri Department of Mental Health for 26 years, Monica Hoy was ready to think about retiring and starting a new adventure. Years before she became the owner of Tan Club, she started gathering information about the industry with the help of her sister, who already had an indoor tanning business of her own. The sisters attended Smart Tan Nashville together for three years, and Monica was floored by the depth and knowledge of the indoor tanning community. Convinced that this was the business for her, she started a build out in September 2014 and opened the following December. As the assistant to the director at the Department of Mental Health, Monica spent her time developing programs and working with individuals and families in the community. Now that she is the owner of an indoor tanning business, she looks forward to continuing her outreach to her community, this time to educate them on smart tanning. The Smart Tan Nashville conferences were the source of Monica's confidence and excitement, so it was only natural that she would get a Smart Tan membership for the salon and take advantage of the professional certifications. She took her UV Tanning Certification to prepare for the opening, and four of her staff members were working on their training as the salon prepared for a grand opening celebration in February. Once the training is complete, Monica plans to use the certifications as an opportunity for public relations in her community by sending a press release to local media outlets.
