Desperately Seeking Sunshine
Trying to come up with something creative and profound to write for my Publisher's Note every
month can be frustrating at times. For most of my adult life I've been fighting the good fight, trying
to educate our market, my family, friends and anybody who will listen about the value of UV
light – and this is usually great inspiration. But this month, my head has been pulled in so many
directions that I couldn't come up with anything I felt really good about.
So I just started thinking about what I've been up to this week. Working with scientists, attorneys,
lobbyists, and industry leaders is my usual week at the office. Then it hit me: I'm not at the office.
The Smart Tan offices are in Michigan, which means snow, sub-freezing temperatures and gray
skies this time of year. Though I love playing in the snow and the cold doesn't bother me, I struggle
with Seasonal Affective Disorder – those winter blues caused by Michigan's lack of sunlight in
winter.
So my wife and I are spending a month in Florida, where I can work on my computer and
telephone from a climate where the sky is blue and the sun is shining. Spending a month outside
under the sun instead of indoors under the dark skies in Michigan is like living in a different world.
And I know I'm not alone. There's no question that everyone is impacted one way or the other by
sunshine. No one prays for a cloudy day.
So here's to all of you dedicated, responsible and professionally trained UV experts delivering a
dose of sunshine and happiness to those so desperately craving it.
Have a sunny tanning season.
