Q: A: Stacie Norvell and Crystal Mears are on a two-day tour of New York City, meeting with top beauty brands like Lucky, InStyle, In Touch Weekly, Women's Health, Real Simple and US Weekly to meet with the big dogs about our "Dancing with the Stars" line. Of course we speak positively about smart tanning. The "Dancing with the Stars" show is owned by BBC and licensed to ABC, which is owned by Disney. We had to go through background checks and meet stringent standards to get this contract with them – it was a process that took us two years, but it is one of the major feathers in our cap. The "Dancing with the Stars" name has drawn a lot of attention from magazines and consumers, and we send them to indoor tanning salons to get the product. INSPIRED IDEAS 79 ❘ SMART TAN MAGAZINE ❘ MARCH 2015 WWW.SMARTTAN.COM Taking Sunless by Storm Rick Norvell, Norvell Skin Solutions As the patriarch of the Norvell family, Rick Norvell stands tall, oozing with pride in the company he created so many years ago, as well as the invaluable staff who work tirelessly to live up to the integrity and values of the Norvell name. In a Smart Tan exclusive interview, Rick shares how the sunless giant is revolutionizing the experience for consumers and helping the reputation of profes- sional salons. Q: A: Actually, the Venetian products we introduced last season has become our number one product, and it's because this is a product based on science. When you build on science, you can expect to see repeatable results. Here is what I believe is important: When you go into the salon to get a UV tan, your body develops melanin, which gives you your tan – that is our body's natural reaction to UV light. People see brown skin, but melanin is not brown. Melanin has a purple cast to it – that's what missing from the skin, and that's why Venetian uses violet bronzers. Instead of using dark brown bronzers that make people look fake, the Venetian products give more natural looking color with violet bronzers. Our chemistry and research also enables us to use natural, vegetable-based bronzers and mix them with the DHA in a way that holds color longer, so you don't feel like you're washing it off in the shower. Our product is also stable and less irritating because of how we do with fragrance. Fragrance can cause instability in a product or cause it to react with DHA, and it also is one of the most irritating ingredients, but we do things right, and that is what makes a difference. We don't try to cover up the smell of DHA, instead we use fragrance to complement it so it creates a pleasant smell. That's why Venetian is going bonkers in our industry. What's new behind the scenes at Norvell? What is Norvell doing to promote the indoor tanning industry? "During these desk-side meetings with magazine editors, we get 15 minutes to explain our brand history and show our product. We also took a new approach and invited them to a hotel room that we converted into a spray tan suite decorated with fowers, candles, cupcakes and product displays. Stacie Norvell has been spray tanning these editors and they have loved the results. I think these meetings show people that there are options for high quality products, and we talk to these national magazines about sending people to professional salons instead of a beauty supply or drug store." - Norvell Creative and Media Director, Crystal Mears
