2013 CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS Saturday: Colorful Inspiration Even after a long night of catching up with fellow salon owners, everyone seemed to perk up on Saturday morning, intrigued by our creative and unusual keynote, Erik Wahl. He initiated his presentation with a high-energy live painting of U2's Bono. After inspiring the artist in all of us through his unorthodox painting style and refreshing approach to business, he yielded the stage to the Smart Tan Industry Award winners. With a fresh perspective and a hopeful outlook, salon owners were in the perfect frame of mind to absorb ideas in the classroom and on the trade show floor. With educational sessions that focused on marketing, training and incentivizing, the remainder of the morning was a flurry of opportunity for growth. Experts like Kizer and Bender, Grant Miller and Joe Levy touched on the most important topics of the moment. But there is nothing quite like the moment when the trade show floor doors are flung open for the first time. In a virtual stampede, everyone flooded through the doors, some even running to their favorite vendors, hoping to be first in line to meet JWOWW, Snooki and Pauly D. Others were thrilled to sample the newest lotions for 2014, try new equipment and services, or ponder over eye-catching accessories. Every major vendor was in attendance, making it a pivotal decision-making event for those who had the unique opportunity to compare their options in person. As night approached, attendees dressed to impress and hit the industry's parties, hosted by New Sunshine and Supre Tan. Stephanie Caley from Rochester, NY — one of the many participants in Erik Wahl's Art Drop scavenger hunt — scoured the city, following Wahl's tips to the secret location of a painting she would ultimately claim as her own!
