MEMBER OF THE MONTH get behind the counter herself and show off the skills she learned in banking to inspire the sales team. deal to use not only for tanning, but also for sunless and teeth whitening services. PooleSide used a similar tactic with a local PROMOTIONS IN MOTION anyone who came into the salon. As a business so focused on customer satisfaction, it's easy to imagine that PooleSide features some pretty phenomenal promotions throughout the year. Robin tries to keep things interesting, and she succeeds by doing things a little differently. BRANCHING OUT Instead of the same old monthly promotions, she creates theme months that really catch the attention of customers. For October, she put out a festive basket of gourds, adorned with special savings. Each customer got to choose something from their "gord-geous" basket of savings. And with a son getting ready for art school, Robin likes to show off with chalk art that matches the occasion. Things continue to look up for PooleSide Tan as they approach their second anniversary. A 700-square-foot expansion and additional equipment is sprucing up their existing space and boosting their client base. When a local hair salon decided to abandon its tanning services, Robin bought the equipment and set up a referral deal for all of the hair salon's tanning clients who made the switch. According to Robin, the expansion should be complete by spring. PooleSide Tan was also contacted to create a satellite location in the Cambridge, Mass. Hyatt hotel. Sunless spray tanning and teeth whitening will complement the hotel's existing spa and is designed to attract bridal clients. Robin is excited to be attached to such a big name, especially since the salon will enjoy space on their website and advertising. "It's a little scary to go out of my comfort zone," says Robin. "But sometimes you have to do that to fulfill the needs of your clients, and I'm definitely happy to bring our services to a new location and demographic." The nearby Walmart draws long lines of customers on Thanksgiving night, so the salon uses it to their advantage: Their sale only takes place for two hours in the middle of the night. The salon is closed on Thanksgiving and all of Black Friday with the exception of midnight to 2 a.m. The staff dresses up like elves and Mrs. Claus for a unique shopping experience. But to make sure the holiday sales lasted all season long, she also created a Christmas tree mystery discount. Instead of having an over the top blowout sale on their anniversary, PooleSide took a thoughtful approach and celebrated their first anniversary with a sale created to incentivize loyal customers. Offering 50 percent off a one year package was an attractive deal that wasn't just about immediate gratification. The salon also does a bridal show each year. In addition to having little freebies, Robin offers them an unloaded gift card. In the event that the bride doesn't come into the store, nothing is lost. But when brides do bring the gift card into the store, it's of the local brides took advantage of the PHOTO COURTESY OF: Katie Pegher, Fine Portraiture 27 ❘ SMART TAN MAGAZINE ❘ SmartTan.com
