canadian update MORE Regulation in Canada Since peak season began in Canada, regulation has started popping up in different provinces. Quebec, for example, introduced strong advertising restrictions in February. Their regulations included an under-18 ban, warning signs, and the prohibition of direct or indirect promotion of artifcial tanning under certain circumstances. These restrictions include ads directed at minors, or those that are false or misleading – especially if it suggests that artifcial tanning equipment is harmless. The big concern on the adverting restriction is the word "indirect." Only time will tell how the inspectors will see advertisements. The Northwest Territories, which have almost no tanning salons, will start their regulations Sept. 1, 2013, which includes a ban on tanning for those under the age of 19 and warning signs. Ontario still has not voted on the second reading for Bill 30. It is expected that this will go through after the provincial budget is fnalized in September. The Joint Canadian Tanning Association is working closely with the government, which it did not have a chance to do with Quebec or the Northwest Territories. New Brunswick introduced Bill 54 for tanning regulations, which included an under-19 ban, warning signs and even harsher advertising restrictions than Quebec. The New Brunswick government added restrictions on the promotion of base tans and vitamin D. Although the JCTA director in New Brunswick worked hard with the JCTA lobbyist to change some of the legislation through a conversation with the Prime Minister's offce and a meeting with the Health Minister, they were not successful. One member of the legislative assembly, whom the JCTA has been working with for three years, even made a presentation to the legislature on the JCTA's behalf. The Health Minister thought our suggested changes were reasonable, but the bill passed without any of the amendments. Regulations will now be written and a date will be set for enforcement. The JCTA is working hard to be part of the regulation phase. Meetings in Saskatchewan are being formed to discuss regulations and an educational campaign. Salon owners and a newly appointed JCTA director will be at these meetings, since they will not allow anyone outside the province to attend. Even I was denied an invitation. This is the frst time any province has not allowed me to be part of government meetings. Further discussions with the government are ongoing to try to get me invited. Now for the good news, the peak season was good! Although the results are not a radical improvement, salons seem to be on par with or above their numbers from the previous year, and optimism is on the rise. Everyone up here just wants to get the regulations over with and get back to taking care of their adult clients. Check out "Tan Naked" on Facebook! The JCTA started its new Tan Naked Lotion Contest thanks to the help of Industry Advocate Lotion Members.
